A Win-Win for Sustainability and Jobs: Kern County Supervisors Advance Carbon-Storage Project

This week the Kern County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a conditional-use permit for California Resources Corporation  (CRC) to move forward with its carbon capture and storage project, the Carbon TerraVault I (CTV I). The first-of-its-kind project in California will capture millions of tons of carbon dioxide and inject it into the ground in San Joaquin Valley.

The decision is a significant step forward in supporting an energy transition in the state – it demonstrates how innovative solutions can preserve industry jobs and local economies while also supporting sustainability.

Francisco Leon, CEO of CRC, told supervisors the project would keep high-paying jobs in the area, including preparing workers for careers in carbon management through a partnership with Kern Community College, as well as reduce carbon emissions.

“The state of California wants an energy transition,” Leon said. “This is how you do it, with projects that deliver on every front. We’re ready to go.”

WSPA looks forward to seeing how this project progresses and supports CRC’s commitment to a sustainable future in California.
